Senate District Convention FAQs

What is Senate District Convention?

Senate District Conventions take place between March and April of each election year. They are organized by your local senate district DFL organization (us!), and involve hundreds of delegates and volunteers working together accomplish a number of important tasks like:
  • Endorsing candidates for the state legislature
  • Electing state central committee members
  • Electing delegates and alternates for the Congressional District Conventions and the State Convention
  • Voting on resolutions submitted on caucus night
  • Amending the party unit constitution
  • Electing party unit directors

When and Where is Senate District 56's Convention?
Senate District 56 DFL (SD56 DFL) will be hosting our convention on March 7th at Falcon Ridge Middle School. If you're a delegate, all you need to do is show up on the day of convention and register with our credentials volunteers. Party officials and volunteers will guide you through the rest of the process. Be aware that Senate District Convention is often an all day event, running from mid morning through the evening.

How do I become a delegate to Congressional District or State Convention?
At Senate District 56 convention, we will elect delegates and alternates who will serve at the higher level CD2 and State Conventions in May. We often use a process called walking sub-caucuses, where groups of attendees who support specific candidates and/or campaign issues meet in different parts of the room. These sub-caucuses attempt to recruit as many members as possible to increase their voting power, then vote on the delegates who will best represent their interests at the higher level conventions.

Wait! Explain walking sub-caucus to me again!
The walking sub-caucus may seem to be a bit confusing so we invite you to go to to this YouTube link and watch this 4-minute presentation that explains what it is and how it's done!

What are pre-convention committees?
Pre-convention committees are temporary units that do the work of organizing convention activities in the coming months. They book the facilities, arrange for food, assemble delegate lists, compile resolutions, evaluate potential candidates, and propose amendments to the party unit constitution. If you're interested in helping organize convention or working with pre-convention committees, please reach out to [email protected].

How do I run for Director or become a State Central Committee member?
If you're interested in running for a position within the DFL, please follow the links on the Leadership Opportunites page and fill out an application and also click on the sign up  button and select a screening time to meet with the nominations committee.. The nominations committee evaluates candidates for director, the state central committee, etc., and makes recommendations to the senate district convention.

Will there be food at the Senate District 56 Convention?
Yes! Senate District Convention is often an all-day event, so we will have various food items. This year, we will be offering donuts, chips, cookies, fruit, coffee and water.  You're also free to bring your own bag lunch, water and snacks.

What are the rules for delegates and candidates at Senate District Convention?
Our rules committee is still establishing procedures and rules for the convention. We will update this page as additional details become available.

Is there an official proposed convention agenda?
Yes! The proposed agenda is here.
